Search Engine Submission
Search engine submission is how a webmaster has a website directly to a search engine. While Search Engine Submission is often seen as a way of promoting a website, usually not necessary. Because the major search engines like Google, Yahoo, and MSN use crawlers, robots and spiders that eventually find themselves most web sites on the Internet.

There are two basic reasons to submit a website or webpage to a search engine. The first reason would add a whole new website because the site operators prefer not to wait for a search engine to discover them. The second reason is to have a web page or website updated in the corresponding search engine.

How web sites are submitted
There are two basic methods still in use today that allows a webmaster to submit your site to a search engine. You can submit only one site at a time, or may present your entire site at once with a site map. However, all that a webmaster really needs to do is to present only the main page of a website. With only the home page, most search engines are able to crawl a site, provided it is well designed.

Web sites wish to be present in most popular search engines because it's how people access web sites. People like to look up information on the web in what is known as a search engine. The sites listed on the first page of a search is said to be in the top 10. When you click a hyperlink causes the web page that is to appear on the browser of Web browsers.

Thus, webmasters often highly desire that their sites appear in the top 10 in a search engine. This is because search engines are not very likely to look over more than one page of search results, known as SERPs.

To obtain a good placement in search results on the various engines, webmasters must optimize their websites. The process is called search engine optimization. Many variables come into play, such as the placement and density of desirable keywords, the hierarchical structure of web pages used in a website (ie many clicks from the home page needed to access a website particular?), and the number of websites that link to a particular Web page. The Google search engine also uses a concept called PageRank.

PageRank relies on the uniquely democratic nature of the web by using its vast link structure as an indicator of the value of an individual page. In essence, Google interprets a link from page A to page B as a vote of a page, for page B. But Google looks at more than the volume of votes, or links a page receives, for example, also analyzes the page that casts the vote. Votes cast by pages that are "important" weigh more heavily and help to make other pages "important." Using these and other factors, Google provides its views on the relative importance of pages.

Crawler-based search engine submission
To get optimal listings in the crawler-based search engines, keywords and key concepts must be placed strategically throughout your web pages. To summarize, you need these words in phrases in:
  • Titles
  • Meta-tags
  • Alt-attribute
  • Headings
  • Main, visible body text
  • Anchor text
  • Other factors that affect search engine rankings are (X)HTML layout, keyword density, keyword prominence, and keyword placement.

Details about keyword placement are available in Parts 2 and 3 of Search Engine Visibility (2nd edition).
